Very common winter visitor, common passage migrant and resident.
Where in Kuwait 
This species is a generalist in its habitat use, but in Kuwait is a widespread coastal and wetland fish-eating bird; up to 650 birds recorded on mudflats in Kuwait Bay. It breeds on Bubiyan Island and its vicinity; about 150 breeding pairs were counted on Bubiyan in 2004.
In the world 
Most Palearctic populations of this species are fully migratory, it occurs from sea-level up to 500 or even 1,000 m. Its diet consists predominantly of fish and eels 10-25 cm long, as well as amphibians, crabs, molluscs, crustaceans, aquatic insects, snakes, small rodents, small birds.
Local threats 
This species is also susceptible to avian botulism, but will also susceptible to pollution along the coast where it is most often found.
