Common passage migrant, rare summer visitor. Up to 120 individuals recorded in September 1992. An unusual long-distance migrant that winters well south of our deserts, in Africa and southern Asia.

A slender-necked dabbling duck with a rather flat crown and straight bill. It breeds on shallow, eutrophic fresh water in lowland and steppe habitat and winters in Africa.
Shooting is a threat for Geese and Ducks during passage migration.
